Transport-related CO2 Emissions of the Tourism Sector : Modelling Results. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and International Transport Forum (ITF), Madrid, December 2019, 72 p. [formato PDF, 2,9 MB]. "The number of tourists travelling across borders is expected to reach 1.8 billion a year by 2030, according to the latest UNWTO predictions. This will be alongside a further 15.6 billion domestic tourist arrivals. Such growth will bring many opportunities, including socioeconomic development and job creation. At the same time, however, greenhouse gas emissions linked to tourism-related transport are also rising, challenging the tourism sector's ambition to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement. UNWTO and ITF embarked on this research project with the aim of providing evidence of the CO2 emissions from tourism and the implications of the different modes of transport. The report provides insights into the evolution of tourism demand across the different global regions up to the year 2030. It also presents the expected transport-related CO2 emissions of the tourism sector against the current ambition scenario for the decarbonization of transport."

Nature Climate Change, volume 8, pages 522-528 (2018) [formato PDF, 2,6 MB]. "Tourism contributes significantly to global gross domestic product, and is forecast to grow at an annual 4%, thus outpacing many other economic sectors. However, global carbon emissions related to tourism are currently not well quantified. Here, we quantify tourism-related global carbon flows between 160 countries, and their carbon footprints under origin and destination accounting perspectives. We find that, between 2009 and 2013, tourism's global carbon footprint has increased from 3.9 to 4.5 GtCO2e, four times more than previously estimated, accounting for about 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Transport, shopping and food are significant contributors. The majority of this footprint is exerted by and in high-income countries. The rapid increase in tourism demand is effectively outstripping the decarbonization of tourism-related technology. We project that, due to its high carbon intensity and continuing growth, tourism will constitute a growing part of the world's greenhouse gas emissions."

Revista Electrónica de Geografía y Ciencias sociales. Barcelona: Universidad de Barcelona, 1 de febrero de 2008, vol. XII, núm. 258 [formato Html]. "The mass tourism is one of the great profits of the welfare state. Also, tourism has induced an important economic activity. In this context, the international tourism increased 50 percent of the 1990s. It´s certain that the technology has advanced enough to avoid the impacts that this mobility generates, although the increase of tourism has been so great, that the technological advances have not been able to restrain such impacts. In addition, the tourist trips tend to be more distant and frequent. The transport is one of the sectors that contribute more to the climatic change among other factors and, nevertheless, the growth of the international tourism is thought that in period 1995 - 2020, it will be of 175 percent, that is to say, billion tourists more. For that reason, it is a challenge for tourism, to make compatible the development of this activity with the serious impacts of the transport."

Paul Peeters (NHTV Univ. Appl. Sci., Breda), Trends in European tourism transport and its impacts. Conference "Environmentally friendly travelling in Europe", Vienna, 30-31.01.2006, 11 p. [formato PDF, 315 kB]. "Environmental impacts of intercontinental tourism are large compared to their economic value. Therefore current large growth of ICA travel should be somehow counteracted. Any such measures will be difficult to enforce as they not only go against the current trends, but are also opposed by the tourism industry. On the other hand, more people travel from the EU to other continents than vice versa, so for the EU less growth of ICA is economically probably advantageous. At the moment ticket prices do not show any correlation with ecological damage caused by travel. Air tickets sell at three or four eurocents per pkm while long distance rail tickets cost ten to twenty cents per pkm. The national structure of rail transport makes it difficult to enhance international passenger transport. Furthermore, the average length of stay should be enhanced by actions at destinations in cooperation with transport companies. Finally, the ecological efficiency of transport systems has to be increased, not only for car and aircraft, but also for coach and rail. The latter to provide the best chances for an ecologically and economically sound travel sector in the EU."

Paul Peeters (NHTV Univ. Appl. Sci., Breda), The impact of tourism on climate change. Proceedings, 2007, 8 p. [formato PDF, 335 kB]. "The impact of tourism activities on climate change are not very evenly distributed over the different kinds of tourism. Main determinants are the distance between the destination and the homes of the tourists, the transport mode choice and the length of stay. Overall impact of tourism is between 4% and 10% globally, but can be as high as 20% for developed economies. Almost 90% of all tourism greenhouse gas emissions are generated by transport in general and some 70-80% of this relates to air transport in particular, while road transport is still the main transport mode for tourism (in number of trips). Generally tourists tend to choose more often for air transport, destinations at longer distances and shorter stays plus increasing number of trips. All of these choices direct to a reduction of the eco-efficiency of tourism. Some further prospects for technological innovation in air transport exist, but progress will not be large enough to compensate for the growth of air transport volume."

Sci. 2022, 12(1), 40 (14 p.) [formato PDF, 1,7 MB]. Open Access. "This work aims to analyze the impact of technological eco-innovation on the modernization and development of a local area. The role of eco-innovation would be to stimulate an innovative environment and spur a development of the territory and economic districts, and the diffusion of said particularities among wider geographic contexts, hence allowing a globalization model more observant of local specificities, and thus an open system able to develop economic and cultural exchange respecting local particularities. In recent years, smart city has asserted itself as a general model for the city of tomorrow, and sustainability has become a focal point in urban development policies. In this paper, we investigate how an integrated and intermodal methodology for the development of smart mobility systems - the European project "Life for Silver Coast" - is impacting the modernization and development of an Italian coastal area in Tuscany. The main focus of our paper is to understand how an integrated mobility network allows a transition toward a sustainable form of social relationship and a new economic pattern and could represent the starting point for a spatial, relational and institutional reorganization process that would lead to a change in the production and management dynamics of the local ecosystem concerning cultural, social and economic issues."

[formato PDF, 282 kB]. Open Access. "Overtourism has given rise to conflict among various stakeholders. Accordingly, to control overtourism, the public sector has started to implement policies. Recently, Udo off Jeju Island in South Korea has begun experiencing overtourism; to prevent the situation from deteriorating, the public sector implemented a vehicle restriction policy. This study used a cost-benefit analysis framework to assess the social costs and benefits of the public policy to control overtourism in Udo. Through interviews and relevant data and documents, this study classified analysis items related to the policy that could be either a cost or benefit to different stakeholders. The social cost-benefit analysis showed that the net benefit increases, the longer the policy continues, thus ensuring it is adequate and feasible to implement the policy. An effective management public policy for the sustainability of the region's tourism should always be promoted."

Sustainability 2019, 11, 739 (17 p.) [formato PDF, 3,3 MB]. Open Access. "Studies have shown that certain modes of tourist development jeopardize the environment, as in the case of mass tourism, especially in areas that require special protection. The goal of this study is to apply a proposal for studying sustainability of tourist mobility to a protected space, the island of Lanzarote, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This paper seeks to figure out the mobility patterns of tourists, the criterion used to select a mode of transportation, the attitude of tourists towards the sustainability of transport, and its environmental implications by analyzing secondary sources and interviewing tourists. The results show that the tourism model of the island is based on scattered natural resources that tourists want to enjoy in a tailor-made visit, which makes it hard to give up individual transportation. The only environmentally sustainable alternative is opting for electric vehicles with charging stations in the aforementioned tourist spots."

Conference Paper, International Scientific Conference on Mobility and Transport Transforming Urban Mobility, mobil.TUM 2016, 6-7 June 2016, Munich, Germany. "Electric vehicles (EV) bring benefits for the urban environment but represent an additional cost for households. That is why the spread of electromobility starts with niche markets appropriate to their territorial context. On this principle, we design a business model for an EV sharing scheme based on assumptions about sites attractive to tourists to the technical means of production passing by the estimate of potential demand. To address the challenge of profitability, several scenarios are tested, with different fleet sizes and financing costs. In the model, investment costs represent 26 to 34% of total costs and variable costs account for 50 to 62% of operating costs. The project can be undertaken regardless of fleet size, provided that its financing cost is 8% or less. It raises questions about the distribution of the value generated."

GREThA, Université de Bordeaux, 2011, 21 p. [formato PDF, 285 kB] "This paper recounts slow rail tourism development in France since 1870. It presents a pioneer analysis regarding the various forms of this tourism chaining process and their interactions. The first so-called leisure shape appears in the 1870s in connection with the advent of a sensitivity rewarding mountainous and coastal scenery. The second so-called heritage shape is based on the nostalgia of old trains railway enthusiasts try to revive. Finally, since the 1980’s, hybrid forms such as local animation railways and luxury trains emerge. This theme has been relatively little studied in France until now. Moreover, it appears that its economic importance is by far less than in other countries (Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States). The article also aims to point out this thwarted development."

D.H.P. Verbeek, J.T. Mommaas (Tilburg University), Sustainable tourism mobility: the Social Practices Approach. 2007, 12 p. [formato PDF, 182 kB]. "Sustainability is a known topic in tourism research. However, research shows a dualistic approach to sustainability, being either structure-centred or actor-centred. Furthermore, research is too generic, concentrating on tourism as such instead of on specific meaningful holiday practices. In our view mitigation of climate change caused by tourism mobility is only possible when the dualistic approach is overcome and practice-specificness is taken into account. In this paper the Social Practices Approach is introduced. It is a contextual model of consumption that combines an actor-oriented approach with a system of provision perspective of consumer behaviour. Its focus is on the social practice itself in which actors with their lifestyles and routines on the one hand, and provisioners and infrastructure on the other hand are analysed in interaction. The Social Practices Model offers the insight that consumers and producers shape each other through the production-consumption chain."

    EFFETTI ECONOMICI DEL TURISMO SOSTENIBILE

The Economic Impact of Cycle Tourism in North East England. Executive Summary. Sustrans, Bristol, April 2007, 4 p. [formato PDF, 323 kB]. "The research uses a unique approach, applying established, contemporary econometric theories in combination with user-oriented data collection to produce a ‘bottom-up’ measure of economic impact. This differs from most analyses of tourism activity (and economic activity in other sectors) by virtue of the fact that other research has tended to rely on aggregation methods from a ‘top down’ perspective that are inherently flawed by the nature of their design. This research therefore represents an internationally significant contribution to researcher and practitioner knowledge, as well as providing an unusually accurate measure of the extent of the impact of cycling activity in the North East region. Whilst creating the most accurate reflection of cycling in the North East, it is worth reiterating that other tourism activity, unless analysed in a similar way, will be overvalued, perhaps to the disadvantage of cycling. The current economic policy in the North East of England, recognises the importance of the tourism sector to the regional economy. Within this context and in relation to rural regeneration, tourism strategies highlight cycling as an appropriate tourism offering to develop. The study findings show clearly the extent of demand that exists for leisure cycling in the North East region. They also illustrate the extent to which leisure cycling can play a part in the regeneration of the North East region through attracting out-of-region tourism, stimulating tourism business development, and improving the quality of life for North East residents."

Verkehrsforschung online, 1/2005, 28 p. [formato PDF, 24 kB] "The paper reviews leisure travel as an intersection between transport and tourism research. Although a main part of the passenger transport performance in Germany is caused by leisure activities, this segment has not been part of sustainability considerations so far. Existing evaluation tools mostly refer to the infrastructure and do not allow to measure the ecological, economical and social impacts of a single trip. Within the scope of the dissertation “Concepts and instruments for designing sustainable leisure travel products in tourism” a user-friendly evaluation tool for short term leisure travel has been developed."

    MOBILITA' DEI GRANDI EVENTI

The Flåm Railway, "one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world" (Norway). "Discover the Flåm Railway - an incredible train journey from the mountain station at Myrdal on the Bergen Railway, down to Flåm station nestled in the innermost corner of the Aurlandfjord. Each year, this exciting stretch of railway attracts people from all corners of the world, making the Flåm Railway one of Norway's major and most spectacular tourist attractions."

The Setesdalsbanen (Norway). In November 1896 a 78-km (48,5 miles) long Setesdalsbanen was opened up to ordinary service between Kristainsand and Byglandsfjord. The railway line was built to link the Setesdal to the coastal town of Kristiansand. With this town’s port and connections to other Norwegian coastal towns and Europe, it opened up a valley, which up to that time had been very isolated. Setesdalsbanen was closed in 1962, the last narrow gauge line to be operated by the Norwegian State Railways. A society was formed, and the volunteers playing an important source of manpower staffing the railway on the days of operation and in maintaining the raliway in nearly all aspects. The line is open during the summer season (June, July and August) running trains with steam engines and old wooden bodied coaches offering a journey on a railway typical of its time with sharp curves, a bridge spanning the river, a tunnel and a snowshed.

The Bernina Express (ferrovia retica, Svizzera).

The Glacier Express (ferrovia retica, Svizzera).

"The longest route, the longest tunnel and probably also the most spectacular landscape: among the narrow gauge railways in Austria the Mariazellerbahn holds a couple of records. On its way from St. Pölten to Mariazell, it passes the wild and partially fissured Ötscher land with passages of up to 27 per mille."

Le Train des Pignes, Nice-Digne (Chemins de Fer de Provence, France). The term Train des Pignes primarily signifies the four railways with metre gauge that once existed in the departments of Alpes-Maritimes (06), Var (83), Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (04) and Bouches-du-Rhône (13) in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur (PACA) région in southern France. Only the one between Nice and Digne is still in operation. Therefore, today most people when they use the term, unaware of the history, refer to the Nice-Digne line only.

Tren de Sóller / Ferrocarril de Sóller, Mallorca (Spain). Ever since 1912 the Sóller railway has been running a daily train service along the 27.3 km route between Palma de Mallorca and Sóller, without interruption. From 1913 it has also run the tram service along the 4.9 kilometres from Sóller and the Port of Sóller.

Ferrovia Val d'Orcia (Toscana). Treni storici a vapore in alcuni giorni festivi.

Ferrovia Turistica Camuna sulla linea Brescia - Iseo - Edolo. Treni storici a vapore o automotrici diesel.
